Do it for the Money - but do it right

Real Estate as the Road to Riches

I can't count how many people I've met over the years who have gotten into the real estate business for the money.

Maybe they think the business is really easy - wake up late, show a couple houses to a buyer, and pocket a ten grand commission.

Or they think it's a road to riches - sell 3-4 houses a month and make a fat six-figure income.

Either way, they're likely to be disappointed. This business can be a grind, and you have work hard, consistently, to reach success. Sure, there will be some easy deals along the way. And yes, you can definitely make a lot of money. But don't think for a minute it'll be easy.

Real Estate to Serve Others

On the flip side, I've been to a number of seminars and training courses over the years, where the over-the-top excited marketing guru explains how it's not about the money at all - the whole key to this business is about wanting to help others.

I'm sorry, but I call BS on that one. You may really enjoy helping all these people attempt to reach new heights, Mr Speaker, but I doubt you would be here today if you weren't getting paid (and/or selling your goods and services in the lobby after the presentation!)

The Best of Both Worlds

The good news is you don't have to choose one or the other. You can choose both. (The bad news, for those who want the easy money, is that the only way to real, long-term success, IS to choose both.)

Nobody works for free. Even people who LOVE what they do still enjoy getting paid - and why shouldn't they? What's wrong with getting paid for helping people, especially when it's something you're good at and they need expert advice? People are more than willing to pay for excellent service.

Do it for the Money

1.) Make sure you enjoy doing what you do, because it shows. If you don't love your job, your clients won't love you. And you can't make big money if your clients don't love you.

2.) Be good at what you do - very good. Because your clients will know the difference.

3.) Charge a fair price. Fair doesn't mean cheap; it means fair. Charge what you're worth, and your clients will be happy to pay.

If you're looking for easy money, keep walking - you're in the wrong job. But don't think "helping people" is the end game, either.

Helping people, and making people happy, is merely a winning strategy in the game of making money. It's ok to do both. In fact, it's preferred.
